How cashback actually works

The shop pays for the customer, we pass on a share, and a hold period sits in between. Here is the whole chain, including the parts nobody advertises.

Cashback sounds like a discount, but it is not one. Nothing changes at the till: you pay the normal price. What happens is that the shop pays a commission for having brought you to them, and part of that commission comes back to you. Understanding that one sentence explains almost every rule that follows.

The chain, from tap to payout

When you open a shop from inside Hustly, we attach an identifier to that click. You land in the shop and buy exactly as you always would. Days later the shop reports back: this click led to an order of this value. We calculate your share, and it appears in your balance.

That identifier is the whole mechanism. It is also its weak point: everything that can break cashback comes down to the shop no longer being able to connect your order to your click.

Why the money waits

A confirmed reward first sits in your balance as pending, usually for 14 days. This is not us holding on to your money. It is the window in which the shop can still reverse the order: a return, a cancellation, a payment that failed.

If we paid out immediately, we would be handing over money that gets taken back from us afterwards. Platforms that skip the hold either carry that risk quietly, or claw it back from you later. We would rather tell you the waiting time up front.

What the percentage refers to

Cashback is calculated on the price of the goods. Shipping, and anything you paid with a gift card or voucher balance, are not part of it. That is not fine print we invented. The shop pays its commission on the same basis.

What it is worth

Cashback is not a way to make money. It is a way to lose slightly less on things you were going to buy anyway. Treated as a reason to buy, it costs you far more than it returns. A 5% rate on something you did not need is a 95% loss.
